The master of kantele pop – Lauri Schreck.
Lauri Schreck is a Helsinki-based multi-instrumentalist and innovator of our national instrument , the kantele , whose kantele repertoire includes Thunderstruck , Cha Cha Cha and Finlandia . Lauri's one-man spectacle, which uniquely combines the Finnish traditional instrument with well-known rock/pop hits, has already delighted audiences at hundreds of events around the world. The performance offers an explosive musical show, but also arresting interpretations of ballads such as Stand By Me and Mestaripiiros.
The most common feedback is a bewildered comment: "I never would have thought that a kantele could sound so good! How can someone play these songs on a kantele!? That sounds better than the original song!".
On TV, Lauri regularly appears in various programs every year and is remembered for his performances in the Talent Suomi finals, Vain elämää season 10 alongside Antti Tuisku and Joulumielä. Lauri has also performed with top artists such as Pepe Willberg, Nina Tapio and Mira Luoti (PMMP). During Finland's 100th anniversary celebrations, Lauri even got to perform Iron Maiden for Bruce Dickinson himself on a live TV broadcast of Huomenta Suomen.
Lauri's performance is surprising to the domestic audience, as the prejudices surrounding the traditional instrument are very strong. Kantele is played by people other than just the Väinämö people!
